Smara (Morakis) Mermigas

Smara Morakis Mermigas Passed away October 20, 2015 in Baton Rouge, LA. Formerly of Monessen, but made her home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana over the last year and a half. She was born on November 1, 1930 in McKeesport, PA, the daughter of the late Alexander and Mary Mikedaki Morakis. She was a member of the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church of Monessen and the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of White Oak, PA. She was also a member of the G.A.P.A, the St. Spyridon Auxiliary Guild, and was a Sunday School Director and teacher. After her children were grown, she was employed by Brookvale Manufacturing. She enjoyed needlepoint, swimming, and playing in a card group with her close friends. She was a loving grandmother who cherished her 5 granddaughters. She was the wife of the late George (Corky) Mermigas, and is survived by her 3 children, Marian (Timothy) Chitester of Haverford, PA, George (Christine) of Baton Rouge, LA, and Gregory (Stephen Harsnett) of Palm Beach, FL.; 5 granddaughters, Lauren, Clare, Samantha (Daniel) Francioni, Meredith, and Allison; her siblings Kiki, George, James and Nicholas; and sisters-in-law Mary Lou Morakis, Katherine Mermigas and Mary Mermigas; a niece, 4 nephews and numerous cousins and friends. She will be greatly missed by those who love her. The family would like to thank the staff at Sunrise Senior Living and St. Joseph’s Hospice for all of their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church of Monessen, PA or St. Joseph’s Hospice Foundation of Baton Rouge.
